I Won Something (again)!

I'm not the type of person who enters every.single.giveaway.  However, when I have the time and feel like it, I enter the giveaways I'm interested in!  I'm not the luckiest person but I'm starting to feel luckier.  You might remember over the summer when I won an amazing giveaway through Shasta Anne.  I won a Clarisonic Pro!!  I still use this thing every day and I love it...it makes my skin feel so smooth and clean and I can't believe I got it FREE!

Well back in December I entered a giveaway on Amanda's blog, One Extra Degree.  Amanda is a fellow teacher and was giving away an assessment recorder.  I figured this would be PERFECT for me since I teach intervention.  In the mornings, I teach small group reading intervention and this recorder will be perfect to help kids build their fluency.  I also plan on using it with my third graders during running records.  That way, we can discuss the results and they can listen to how they read the story.  I received the recorder in the mail earlier this week and I can't wait to put it to use at school.  I have a feeling the kids will think it's really cool, too!

You can see a post on Amanda's blog here that tells about the recorder and she even uploaded a recording she made!  I might be able to use this to make podcasts with my kindergartners for our class website!

Thanks so much, Amanda....I am very excited to use this new technology resource in my classroom!

It's Ok....

I'm linking up with Neely today over at A Complete Waste of Makeup!

Its Ok Thursdays

It's Ok.....

If I'm at home blogging instead of at school finishing up my rooms.  I have been there every day for the past week or two...including weekends.  Plus I'm waiting on my dining room furniture to be picked up by movers!

If I feel a little sad when my DVR fills up because I haven't been able to watch "my" shows.

If I wait until late afternoon/evening to make the bed.  Sometimes I don't feel like it or have time in the morning!

If I claim to be a neat freak, but my "office" at home is always a disaster.

If I spoil my dogs so much.......you would too if you saw how cute they can be!

If I sometimes like to say "y'all" on my blog but would never say it in real life.  It's cute online!

If I get really excited about free stuff for my classroom, even if it's just paper.  Last year I got NOTHING so ANYTHING is very exciting to me!

If I want to fill y'all in on a fantastic GIVEAWAY!  :)   Head on over to see Kaylee at Not Your Typical Twig for a fun makeup giveaway!

New Shoes and a Special Delivery!

For all of you runners out there, what are your favorite running shoes?  I'm not a "runner" at all, but I do like to try to work out on a regular basis.  This could mean elliptical, workout videos, biking, etc.  I don't really run but I wish I could learn to love it.  :/  I've always loved New Balance and bought a pair of 460's (see pic below) a while ago for working out.  I love how they look and fit (I have narrow feet) but they aren't very supportive and not really "running" shoes.
Out with the old (but not really, I'm keeping these!)....
I got an email for Famous Footwear for 20% off.  This coupon could be used on TOP of the BOGO sale.  Hubby has been talking about getting new running shoes for a while.  Unlike me, he actually goes running!  Anyway, since I'm not a runner, I didn't care if the shoes I bought were the best of the best.  I just wanted something that had decent support, fit my narrow feet, and looked somewhat cute!  I ended up going with Adidas ClimaCools.  I love how they fit and they're cute (obviously I didn't venture too far from the style of my old NB's).  I just bought them so I haven't actually used them yet.  I'll let you all know when I do, though!

....and in with the new!
Now for the special delivery!  Not too long ago, I found out that I won an amazing giveaway hosted by the lovely Shasta Anne!  What did I win, you ask?  A Clarisonic Pro!  I told you it was an amazing giveaway!  Shasta sent me my gift with some pretty pink packaging and even included a super nice note for me!  Unfortunately, my new beauty gadget has to charge for 24 hours before the first use so I'm impatiently waiting for it to be ready!  If you haven't checked out Shasta's blog, head on over!  She has another amazing giveaway for the month of August!

Theme Ideas? (and giveaway winner!)

Last year I had the idea of doing a beachy/ocean theme but didn't really carry through with it.  I had a very small classroom since I was a reading teacher.  I used mostly blue containers and had some ocean/fish borders and bulletin characters, but I didn't do much else.  Here are a few pics from the beginning of the year to give you an idea:

This year, I would love to do some sort of easy theme with my afternoon class.  I'm going to be teaching reading in the morning (no theme, maybe just the ocean decor since I'll be at a new school and can re-use my old stuff).  In the afternoon, I'll have kindergartners who are in a full day program (our district only has 1/2 day kindy still).  My class will be students who need that extra support to make it to 1st grade by next year (mostly students who haven't had many educational opportunities before coming to kindergarten).

I might possibly be sharing a classroom (still waiting to hear from my principal).  If that's the case, I might not be able to go through with a theme.  However, I want to at least have some ideas...I could always do it in the future!  I was thinking about something that will be easy to establish during my first year in this room (if I have it to myself, that is).  Maybe a star theme or something.........  What do you think?

I have a few ideas to go with the star theme, but I'm still not sure if I'm in love with it.  I like that I could use any colors I want and I could easily integrate stars pretty much anywhere.  I just don't know if it's enough of a theme........

Here are some of my ideas so far:
  • Reading Under the Stars (hang stars from ceiling and white twinkle lights, if allowed)
  • STAR folders (Students Taking Academic Responsibility)
  • Reaching for the Stars bulletin board with student goals
  • Rising and Falling Stars for behavior (not so sure about this one....found it on a forum)
  • All Stars bulletin board to display student work
  • Stargazer newsletter
  • Super Star Readers
  • Mrs. P's Shining Stars or Mrs. P's Superstars

P.S. Make sure to head over to Oh Boy 4th Grade and sign Farley's cool guest book feature to see where other bloggers are from!

P.P.S.  I won another giveaway!!  I am really excited to share that I won Shasta Anne's Clarisonic giveaway!  I'm seriously so excited, wahoo!  Head on over to Shasta Anne's blog and check it out!  If you're interested in fashion and girly stuff, I promise you won't be disappointed :)

Random Wednesday!

Shame on me for not blogging in almost a week.  The only excuse I really have is that I've been getting things ready for a really special wedding that's coming up this Saturday!  Gift and card: check.  Seating chart "prettied": check.  Out of town guest bag tags: check. Dress altered: check.  House clean for girls to stay here Friday night and get ready Saturday morning: NO CHECK!  I really need to get on the ball and clean up my house, ugh.

Over the weekend pupper-nutters got haircuts.  A vet office near our house was hosting a charity groom and 100% of the proceeds went to the Leukemia and Lymphona Society.  I usually take my dogs somewhere else but they were beyond booked so this seemed like perfect timing!  Here are some

I also decided to try a new recipe over the weekend.  I haven't been baking much lately and I'm not sure why, I love it!  I found this recipe on one of my favorite food blogs, The Girl Who Ate Everything.

Photobucket

She has a recipe for homemade cookies and cream brownies with an oreo frosting.  I wasn't adventurous to make the homemade brownies (not to mention I didn't have the ingredients on hand) so I just made box brownies with some crumbled oreos and made the frosting.  DELISH!

We also saw Bad Teacher earlier this week.  Definitely recommended for teachers, I thought it was hilarious.  Hubby says "it was better than I expected".  I think he was sad we didn't see Horrible Bosses!  We tried to go over the weekend but they were sold out, boo!  We fed the ducks instead that evening. :)
I also went to Target a few times (surprised?) and found these cute magnetic organizers (they can also be hung on a wall).  I love gray right now so I had to get them.  Do you think they look too cluttered on my fridge?  BE HONEST! :)

Last, but not least, my mom got new countertops yesterday and I'm SUPER jel.  Seriously, they look so good and changed the whole look of her kitchen!

One more thing....a TARGET giveaway.  I love me some Tar-jay!  Head on over to the new blog, Target Treasures and check it out!

Smoothies and Giveaways!

I've been trying to perfect my strawberry smoothie recipe for a while now.  My smoothies always turn out too thick, too thin, filled with ice chunks, etc.  They are never just right...until the other night!  This is what my smoothie looked like [not my photo]:
It also tasted amazing!  BUT for some reason I had to blend it forEVER and I felt like my blender was going to blow up.  Is this normal?  It can't be normal.  Either way, I wanted to share my recipe since it took so long to find the perfect recipe.  Keep in mind that I wanted a simple recipe with minimal ingredients and minimal fuss!

Emily's Straw-Nana Smoothie
14 small frozen strawberries (or 7 large)
1 banana
8 icecubes
2 small scoops of vanilla fro-yo
splash of lemonade

Next time I'm going to try fresh strawberries to see if they make any difference in the amount of time it takes to blend.  I let the frozen strawberries thaw forever but they were still kinda hard....

In other news...there are some great giveaways going on right now!

Go Fourth with Mrs. Owens is giving away a thirty one bag.  Um, hello!  I love 31 products.  Seriously, I just discovered them this past year and I have a laptop case, a tote bag, a keychain, a large utility tote, and a zip-around portfolio....LOVE!  Head on over to Mrs. Owens' blog for 3 chances to win her giveaway!

*Please note: I am not affiliated with the thirty-one consultant on these links.  It was just the best site I could find with pictures of products!

Also, Miss Shasta Anne is giving away a Clarisonic Pro!  What an awesome giveaway!  Head on over to her blog....she is giving everyone TONS of chances to win!

Book Review!

A few weeks ago, I was contacted about reviewing a new book.  I love when people find my blog and contact me about stuff like this!  Not only did they provide me with a free e-book to do the review, but I was able to get a lot of valuable information from the book.

The book is Pam Allyn's Best Books for Boys: How to Engage Boys in Reading in Ways That Will Change Their Lives.  Pam Allyn is a very inspirational lady and is also the founder of LitLife.  Read more about her on her website!

While reading this book, there were a lot of quotes that stood out to me:

“True equality both in the school environment and in the workplace will come when we can embrace differences and affirm them, celebrate them, and move past them.” – page 8
  • I thought this was very meaningful because not everyone seems to be ready to embrace differences.  I think a lot of people notice differences (especially in students), but the important part is to embrace, affirm, and celebrate those differences.  Not only will this help to bring your classroom together as a community of learners, but the students will respect each other!
“For many children, reading is a journey that requires a measure of courage and risk
taking. It is also one of the most deeply satisfying and pleasurable of all human endeavors
and inarguably one of the most profoundly useful. My mission is to help all children achieve
not only functional literacy but transformational literacy. The kind of literacy that will allow
them to learn something new every day, connect to all people everywhere, and to invent
new ideas that could change the world.—And in this process, to learn, through reading,
how to be the kind of person they want to become.” – page 9
  • I really enjoy how you can see Pam Allyn's love of reading come through in some parts of her book.  As a teacher, it is important to model a love of learning.  I like how Pam doesn't just discuss reading as an academic skill, but a lifelong skill that will help our children to succeed and reach their goals.
Using the READ model, there are four essential elements to crafting a reading life: Ritual, Environment, Access, and Dialogue.” – page 13
  • In Part 2 of the book, Pam introduced the READ model.  She goes into detail describing each aspect of the model and how it can help our children to become lifelong readers.
Part 2 of the book also included a variety of questions with answers from Pam.  I really enjoyed reading these questions and answers and I think they would be beneficial to teachers OR parents!  My favorite question was, "When should I stop reading aloud?" Pam starts off her answer by saying "Never!"  I think this is something that a lot of parents (and sometimes teachers) struggle with.  My mom always read aloud to me and I always enjoyed it.  I remember classmates rolling their eyes when our teachers in middle school would want to read a book to us.  However, I think if you catch the child's interest, it can always be beneficial to read aloud, read together, or just read at the same time.  I am a big advocate for modeling a love of reading!

Part 3 includes suggestions of books for boys on various reading levels including emerging, developing, and maturing.  Allyn includes a brief description of the story and sometimes includes discussion points or similar stories.  She has split up the book lists to be organized by subjects (examples: adventure, comic books/graphic novels, fantasy/imagination, history/historical fiction, etc.) so you can easily find something to interest your boy(s).  I loved this part because I can easily use it as a reference after doing an interest inventory with my students.  The end of part 3 includes additional resources such as magazines and web sites!

In her final thoughts, Pam describes how her reading differs from her husband’s reading.  I found this to be interesting because I talk to my husband about it all the time.  I always wonder why he can’t get into books like I can.  He prefers reading magazines, online articles, or even e-books. He just doesn’t like the old school paper books for some reason.  It used to drive me nuts but as long as he’s reading, I guess it’s all the same!

Overall, I think this book would be a great addition to a teacher's professional development library and I also think that parents would benefit from the purchase of this book!  If you have a boy who is struggling to get into reading, definitely check out the book.  I even think it could be a good idea to look at the book lists in Part 2 with your boy and head over to the library to help motivate him!

The book is available on Amazon for a great price and you can also read the wonderful reviews that Amazon users have left (it has 5 stars)!

Don't forget to enter my giveaway!!!
